"That depends entirely on why you're really here." He leans on the cane idly, thoughtful. "Either you think you're very clever, accusing me of having done something to Balthazar, or..." He falls silent, debating and hoping she'll catch his drift and enlighten him.
She knows the dog's name, so that's a point in her favor, but he can't remember if there's a tag on his collar she might have gotten it from.
